Mission 2008: Mozambique

The Well - Funds ALL Raised!

In April of 2008, a survey team from Wellspring first met Pastor Carlos Giua who was sent out and supported by Hands at Work Africa in 2003 to set up the Rubatano Community Center to care for the people affected by the HIV-AIDS crisis in central Mozambique. During that initial visit, Pastor Carlos shared with Pastor Sam and the team that the most pressing need for Rubatano was to have access to plentiful, clean water through the building of a bore hole.

The April team came back and shared this with the church, thus we have been in the process of collecting money for the "Moz Bore Hole Project" and the Fall team is hoping to bring the necessary funds and present this to Carlos. The approximate total cost required is US $6,500. If you would like to contribute to this worthy project, please contact Jenny Hong at admin[at]wellspringsg.org.

The Trip

This will be our fourth return trip to S.Africa and second trip to Mozambique as a church. Since 2005, when the very first team visited Masoyi Home-Based Care (MHBC) in White River, S. Africa, Wellspring has been growing in her partnership with Hands at Work Africa. The first team visited Lula Center, one of the orphan day care centers, and also helped to construct K2, the youth center. The two trips in 2005 and 2007 were vital in helping Wellspring build a better understanding of how Hands at Work Africa functions and operates, especially in learning about the Masoyi-model, a community-based model of caring for the orphan and dying in Africa. What is unique and effective in their approach is that Hands at Work seeks to provide care on multiple levels - home-based care, feeding the orphans, growing food, community schools, peer education, and youth programmes.

As a local church, it is our deep desire to partner with the local body of believers in Mozambique to care for the widow and orphan in Africa. Thus the decision to venture to Mozambique is to pursue future partnership with Pastor Carlos Giua and the church volunteers at the Rubatano Home-Based Care (RHBC). We pray that our time there to host an orphan day for 400 children, to encourage the volunteers and caregivers, and to simply offer what we have with our hands and our feet will not only comfort those suffering and in need but display the glorious truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ by the Church coming together.

The Moz 08 Team will split its time overseas with the first week spent visiting Masoyi in S. Africa, followed by nine days at Rubatano, and one day of team debrief in S. Africa before heading back to the U.S. As the initial team being sent out to serve Carlos and the children and volunteers at Rubatano, we covet your earnest prayers on our behalf so that we may do so with much wisdom, joy, and strength. Please also lift up Pastor Carlos, and the volunteers and caregivers, who day-in and day-out visit, care for, and feed the sick and dying. We would also welcome any other ways you may partner with us as senders through donations for Rubatano (more details on that to follow), the Bore Hole Project, and/or the team itself. Thank you in advance for your support and partnership.
